How to Choose a Travel Power Bank: UK Safety and Airline Guide

A travel power bank should match your devices, remain within airline rules and come from a seller you trust. Capacity alone does not tell you charging speed, safety, size or how many useful phone charges you will receive.


I sell phone accessories in my mobile-phone shop, and compatibility is the first thing I check: the correct port, charging standard, output power and cable matter as much as the number printed on the battery. This article is a practical buying guide, not a hands-on ranking of every model.


AIRLINE RULES CAN CHANGE


Check the UK Civil Aviation Authority, your airline and every connecting carrier shortly before travel. Airlines and countries may impose rules stricter than the general limit.


Power banks are treated as spare batteries. They belong in carry-on baggage, not checked baggage. Protect them from damage and short circuits.


Current UK CAA guidance says lithium-ion power banks up to 100Wh are allowed without operator approval. Units above 100Wh but not exceeding 160Wh require airline approval, while those above 160Wh are prohibited in passenger baggage.


IATA's 2026 guidance also introduces conditions including a limit of two power banks per person, protection against short circuits and restrictions on charging or using power banks onboard. Your airline's instructions are the final practical check for your journey.


1. READ THE WATT-HOUR RATING


Airline limits use watt-hours, written as Wh, rather than only milliamp-hours, written as mAh.


Choose a power bank with the Wh rating clearly printed on the product. A missing or unreadable rating can cause difficulty at airport security.


If a manufacturer provides voltage and capacity but not Wh, the calculation is:


Wh = mAh × nominal voltage ÷ 1,000


For example, 20,000mAh at a nominal 3.7V is approximately 74Wh. Do not assume every 20,000mAh product uses the same stated voltage; use the manufacturer's marked rating.


2. CHOOSE CAPACITY FOR YOUR REAL NEED


5,000mAh CLASS


This can suit emergency phone top-ups and light day trips. It is usually smaller, but may not provide a complete charge for a large phone.


10,000mAh CLASS


This is a practical balance for many travellers carrying a phone and small accessories. It is easier to carry than a larger battery, but the number of full charges varies.


20,000mAh CLASS


This may suit long days, several small devices or limited access to sockets. Expect extra size and weight.


LARGER CAPACITIES


Large models need careful checking of their marked Wh rating and airline rules. Do not buy a unit close to an airline limit unless the marking is clear and you genuinely need the capacity.


Advertised capacity is the energy stored inside the cells, not the exact energy that reaches your phone. Conversion losses, cable quality, temperature, battery age and using the device while charging all reduce the usable result. Claims such as “three full charges” are estimates, not guarantees.


3. MATCH THE OUTPUT TO YOUR DEVICE


Check the device manufacturer's charging specification. Important details include:


• USB-C or USB-A output

• USB Power Delivery support

• Programmable Power Supply support where required

• Maximum output in watts

• Voltage and current profiles

• Whether output is shared across multiple ports


A phone that supports faster charging will only use it when the power bank and cable support a compatible standard. A high wattage printed on the box does not force extra power into a properly designed device; compatible equipment negotiates what it can use.


4. CHECK WHETHER IT CAN CHARGE YOUR LAPTOP


A USB-C connector does not guarantee laptop charging.


Confirm:


• The laptop accepts charging through USB-C

• The required USB Power Delivery wattage

• The power bank supplies that wattage from one port

• The cable is rated for the required power

• The usable capacity is enough to be worthwhile


Some power banks can maintain a laptop or slow its battery drain without charging it quickly. Compare the laptop charger's wattage with the power bank's single-port output.


5. CHECK INPUT SPEED AS WELL AS OUTPUT SPEED


A large power bank can take a long time to recharge if its input is slow. Check the supported input wattage and whether your wall charger provides a compatible standard.


A capable power bank, cable and charger are all required for the advertised recharge speed. Charging-time claims depend on the starting level, temperature and power supply.


6. COUNT THE PORTS CAREFULLY


Multiple ports are useful only if they support your devices.


Read the specification for simultaneous charging. Total output may be divided when two or more devices are connected, reducing speed. Some ports may offer different standards or maximum wattages.


A built-in cable is convenient, but consider what happens if it becomes damaged. A replaceable cable can be easier to maintain.


7. LOOK FOR CLEAR SAFETY INFORMATION


Buy from a known retailer or manufacturer that provides:


• Company and contact details

• Model number and technical ratings

• Charging and safety instructions

• A clear warranty and returns process

• Required UK product information and markings

• Recall support


A logo alone does not prove quality. Be cautious of unrealistic capacity, wattage or charging-time claims, copied reviews, poor spelling on safety labels and prices far below comparable products.


Where genuine USB-IF certification is claimed, it should be verifiable through official certification information. “USB-C compatible” is not the same as certified USB Power Delivery performance.


8. INSPECT IT BEFORE EVERY TRIP


Do not use a power bank that is swollen, cracked, leaking, unusually hot, wet or damaged. Stop using it if it smells unusual, makes noise or repeatedly shuts down.


Do not crush, puncture, modify or open the battery. Keep it away from loose metal objects that could bridge exposed terminals. Use a separate protective pouch where appropriate.


Check official product-recall notices, particularly if the manufacturer or retailer contacts you about a safety issue.


9. CHARGE IT SAFELY


Follow the manufacturer's instructions and use a compatible charger and cable.


Charge on a firm, flat surface where heat can escape. Do not cover it with bedding or clothing, and do not charge it near an exit route. Avoid extreme heat, direct sun and unattended charging for long periods.


If it becomes excessively hot, disconnect it safely if possible and follow the manufacturer's guidance. Do not continue using a damaged lithium battery.


10. PACK IT CORRECTLY FOR A FLIGHT


Before leaving:


• Confirm the Wh rating is visible

• Check the airline's current battery page

• Keep the power bank in carry-on baggage

• Protect it from accidental activation and short circuits

• Do not pack a damaged or recalled unit

• Follow cabin-crew instructions

• Do not recharge the power bank onboard

• Check whether the airline permits using it to charge a device onboard


If cabin baggage is taken at the gate and moved to the hold, remove power banks and spare batteries first.


11. DO NOT THROW IT IN HOUSEHOLD RUBBISH


Lithium batteries can start fires in bins and waste vehicles. Use an appropriate battery or electrical recycling point. If the unit is damaged, ask the manufacturer, retailer or local recycling service how to handle it safely.


A SIMPLE BUYING CHECKLIST


1. List every device you will charge.

2. Check each device's port and charging standard.

3. Choose the smallest capacity that meets the trip.

4. Confirm the printed Wh rating.

5. Check single-port and shared output power.

6. Confirm input speed and charger compatibility.

7. Check size and weight.

8. Verify seller details, warranty and safety information.

9. Check current airline rules.

10. Inspect the unit before packing.

FINAL VERDICT


For many travellers, a clearly labelled 10,000mAh power bank with compatible USB-C charging is a sensible starting point. Choose by Wh rating, verified charging support, size, safety information and retailer support rather than a “best” label. Check airline rules again before every flight.
