How to Improve Phone Battery Life and Battery Health Safely
Phone battery life means how long the phone runs between charges. Battery lifespan means how long the battery remains useful before ageing makes replacement necessary. A setting can improve today's runtime without changing long-term ageing, so it helps to separate the two goals.
Lithium-ion batteries naturally lose capacity with age and charge cycles. No setting restores worn battery material. Good habits can reduce unnecessary drain and heat, while a qualified battery replacement may be the correct fix for an older phone.
I run a mobile-phone shop and regularly hear that a phone “suddenly needs a new battery.” Sometimes the battery is worn; other times the cause is a new app, weak signal, a software process or a damaged charger. Diagnose before buying anything.
SAFETY FIRST
Stop using and charging a phone if it is swollen, leaking, hissing, smoking, unusually hot, smells strange or has a case or screen being pushed apart.
Turn it off if safe to do so. Do not press a swollen screen back into place, puncture the battery or attempt a home battery replacement. Keep away from flammable materials and contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician for advice.
If there is smoke or fire, leave the area, close doors behind you and call emergency services. Do not put a damaged lithium battery in household rubbish.
1. CHECK WHAT IS USING THE BATTERY
IPHONE
Open Settings and Battery. Review activity and battery use by app over the recent periods shown.
ANDROID
Open Settings and Battery, then look for Battery usage. Names and locations vary by manufacturer.
Look for:
• An app using far more power than expected
• High screen-on time
• Background activity
• Poor mobile signal
• Navigation or hotspot use
• Camera, video or gaming sessions
• A drain that began after installing an app
• A process active when the phone was idle
Battery percentages show proportion, not always the total energy used. An app can appear at the top simply because little else was used.
2. RESTART AND UPDATE
If drain began suddenly, restart the phone. Then install official operating-system and application updates.
An update can temporarily increase activity while the phone indexes files, updates apps or finishes setup. Give it a reasonable period and compare similar days.
If severe drain continues, check the phone manufacturer's support page before resetting the device. Back up important data first.
3. CONTROL THE DISPLAY
The screen is often a major consumer of power.
Try:
• Lowering brightness to a comfortable level
• Enabling adaptive or automatic brightness
• Shortening screen timeout
• Turning off always-on display when not useful
• Reducing a high refresh rate if the phone allows it
• Using dark mode on an OLED display when you prefer it
Dark mode does not save the same amount on every screen or at every brightness. It should be treated as one small adjustment rather than a complete solution.
4. USE BATTERY SAVER
iPhone Low Power Mode and Android Battery Saver reduce or delay some background work and visual effects.
Use them when you need longer runtime, but expect possible changes to:
• Email and app refresh
• Visual effects
• Performance
• Network activity
• Location updates
• Screen behaviour
Do not assume delayed notifications mean an app is broken while power-saving restrictions are active.
5. REVIEW BACKGROUND ACTIVITY CAREFULLY
Restrict apps that do not need frequent background updates. Do not block background work for alarm, health, accessibility, messaging, security or work applications without understanding the effect.
On Android, keep the system's normal battery optimisation enabled unless an app's official support instructions require an exception.
On iPhone, review Background App Refresh and location permissions. Choose the least access that still allows the feature you need.
6. LOCATION, SIGNAL AND CONNECTIVITY
Navigation, weak mobile signal, hotspot use and constant data transfers can increase drain.
Practical steps include:
• Downloading maps for offline use where supported
• Turning off personal hotspot when finished
• Using stable Wi-Fi when appropriate
• Removing unused Bluetooth accessories
• Reviewing apps with “Always” location access
• Using aeroplane mode only when you genuinely do not need calls or data
Leaving Bluetooth or Wi-Fi enabled is not always the main problem; modern phones manage idle radios. Repeated searching, poor reception and active transfers matter more. Do not disable emergency communications merely to save a small amount of power.
7. NOTIFICATIONS AND VIBRATION
Frequent notifications wake the screen, play sound and trigger vibration.
Turn off non-essential alerts and group notifications where the operating system allows. Keep important security, banking, health, travel and emergency alerts enabled according to your needs.
8. REMOVE OR FIX A PROBLEM APP
If one app shows unusual drain:
1. Update it from the official app store.
2. Restart the phone.
3. Check the app's settings.
4. Remove unnecessary widgets or constant location access.
5. Contact the developer if the problem continues.
6. Uninstall it only after confirming important data is backed up.
Avoid “battery cleaner” or “RAM booster” apps that promise impossible improvements. Constantly closing and reopening apps can sometimes use more energy than allowing the operating system to manage them.
9. HEAT IS A MAJOR BATTERY ENEMY
High temperature can temporarily reduce performance and accelerate long-term battery ageing.
Avoid:
• Leaving the phone in direct sunlight or a hot vehicle
• Charging under a pillow, blanket or clothing
• Heavy gaming or navigation while the phone is already very hot
• Enclosed mounts exposed to sun
• Damaged or poorly fitting cases that trap abnormal heat
• Charging a wet device
If the phone becomes hot, stop demanding tasks, move it to a cooler dry place and let it cool naturally. Do not put it in a refrigerator or freezer because condensation can cause damage.
Apple states that using an iPhone in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life. Follow the temperature guidance for your exact device.
10. USE A COMPATIBLE CHARGER AND CABLE
Use equipment that meets the phone manufacturer's power and charging requirements.
Check:
• Connector type
• USB Power Delivery or other required charging standard
• Charger output
• Cable power rating
• Product-safety information
• Damage to plugs, cable or port
Fast charging is a supported feature on compatible phones, but it can create more heat under some conditions. The phone normally controls charging speed. Replace damaged cables and stop using a charger that overheats, crackles, smells or has loose pins.
Do not force a connector or scrape a charging port with metal. If the port is blocked or damaged, use official cleaning guidance or a technician.
11. CHARGING TO 80% IS OPTIONAL, NOT A RULE
Keeping a lithium-ion battery at very high charge for long periods can contribute to ageing, which is why some phones offer charging optimisation or a selectable charge limit.
Apple's Optimized Battery Charging reduces time spent fully charged. Supported iPhones also offer charge-limit choices. Supported Pixel phones provide charging optimisation and, on some models, an 80% limit.
Use the feature built into your phone if it fits your routine. Charging to 100% when you need the full range is normal. Do not let anxiety about an exact 20–80 rule make the phone less useful.
Partial charging during the day does not harm an iPhone, according to Apple. Avoid regularly running the phone until it switches off when convenient, but an occasional low charge is not an emergency.
12. OVERNIGHT CHARGING
Modern supported phones manage charging electronically, and optimised charging can reduce time spent at full charge.
Safety still matters:
• Use a compatible, undamaged charger
• Place the phone on a firm surface
• Keep it uncovered
• Keep it away from exits and flammable material
• Do not charge a damaged or wet device
• Follow local fire-safety and manufacturer guidance
If you are concerned about a charger or battery, do not leave it charging while asleep.
13. WIRELESS CHARGING

Battery-health information varies. Some Pixel models show Battery health and Charging optimisation. Other manufacturers provide diagnostics in their support app or service menu.
Do not compare a health percentage from one brand directly with another. Estimation methods and reporting differ.
15. WHEN REPLACEMENT MAY HELP
Consider manufacturer or qualified repair advice when:
• Runtime is no longer adequate for your needs
• The phone shuts down unexpectedly
• Battery health shows a service warning
• Charging is unreliable after the port and charger are checked
• Performance is limited because the battery cannot supply required power
• The battery is physically swollen or damaged
A replacement will not fix a power-hungry app, weak network or damaged charging circuit. Ask for a diagnosis and written price.

If storing a phone for months:

• Store it in a cool, dry place
