Budget Gaming Accessories: What to Upgrade First (UK Guide)
A gaming accessory is good value only when it fixes a limitation in your current setup. A colourful keyboard or a high-DPI mouse will not automatically improve every game, and a product that works on one platform may have limited features on another.
I sell technology accessories in my mobile-phone shop, and customers often focus on brand names or lighting before checking compatibility, comfort and the games they actually play. This guide explains what to prioritise without presenting untested products as “the best.”
Editorial note: This is a research-based buying guide informed by customer questions. It is not a hands-on product ranking, and I have not personally tested every accessory or model mentioned.
AUDIT YOUR CURRENT SETUP FIRST
Before spending money, identify the problem you want to solve:
• Does the mouse feel uncomfortable or track inconsistently?
• Does the keyboard fail to register combinations used in your games?
• Is voice chat unclear?
• Does the controller work with your platform and chosen games?
• Is your display limiting the frame rate your system can produce?
• Is your chair or desk causing discomfort?
• Are you buying a functional improvement or only a visual change?
Upgrade the item causing the clearest problem. There is no universal order that suits every player.
1. GAMING MOUSE
A gaming mouse may offer adjustable sensitivity, additional buttons, onboard profiles and different shapes. Maximum DPI is often emphasised in advertising, but a very high number is not automatically better.
Check:
• Shape and size for your hand
• Grip style and button placement
• Sensor behaviour at the sensitivity you use
• Weight
• Cable flexibility or wireless battery life
• Software support for your operating system
• Whether settings can be stored on the mouse
• Warranty and return policy
Polling rate describes how frequently the mouse reports information to the computer. Higher settings can provide more frequent input updates, but the practical benefit depends on the system, game and player. Do not buy on a polling-rate number alone.
If possible, handle the mouse or purchase from a retailer with an appropriate returns policy. Comfort cannot be judged reliably from specifications.
2. KEYBOARD
Mechanical switches are not automatically faster or better than every membrane keyboard. Switch feel, layout, noise, build quality and reliable key registration matter more than the word “mechanical.”
Important checks include:
• Full-size, tenkeyless or compact layout
• UK key layout where required
• Key combinations supported at the same time
• Wired, Bluetooth or low-latency wireless connection
• Replaceable switches or keycaps if that matters to you
• Software and profile requirements
• Noise level in a shared room
• Detachable and replaceable cable
RGB lighting is a preference, not a performance feature. Prioritise a usable layout and consistent keys before paying extra for lighting.
3. HEADSET, HEADPHONES AND MICROPHONE
Good positional audio depends on the game’s sound design, system settings, headphones and the listener. A headset cannot guarantee a competitive advantage.
Check:
• Comfort, weight and clamping force
• Microphone clarity
• Wired or wireless connection
• Battery life and charging connector
• 3.5mm, USB or console compatibility
• Whether volume controls work on your platform
• Replaceable ear pads or cable
• Return policy for hygiene-sensitive products
“Virtual 7.1” is usually software processing rather than seven physical speakers around the listener. Some people prefer it; others prefer standard stereo. Try both where possible.
If you already own comfortable headphones, a separate budget microphone may be more useful than replacing them with a gaming-branded headset.
4. CONTROLLER
Controller compatibility must be checked for the exact platform, connection type and game.
Sony confirms that DualSense controllers can connect to compatible PCs and other devices using USB-C or Bluetooth, but some features depend on the game and connection. Xbox also publishes platform-specific compatibility information for its controllers.
Before buying, check:
• Supported console, PC or mobile platform
• USB, Bluetooth or proprietary wireless connection
• Whether the game supports that controller
• Headset-jack support
• Vibration, adaptive-trigger or haptic limitations
• Firmware-update method
• Replaceable or rechargeable battery
• Official licensing where required
A cheap controller is poor value if its sticks develop problems quickly or important features do not work on your platform.
5. MOUSE PAD OR DESK MAT
A clean, consistent surface can improve mouse movement and protect a desk. You do not need an expensive gaming mat purely for performance.
Choose based on:
• Available desk space
• Mouse sensitivity and required movement area
• Surface speed and control preference
• Non-slip base
• Edge durability
• Ease of cleaning
Measure your desk before buying. An oversized mat can interfere with monitor stands, chargers or other equipment.
6. DISPLAY UPGRADE
A higher-refresh-rate monitor can make supported motion appear smoother, but the monitor, cable, graphics output and game must all support the chosen resolution and refresh rate.
Microsoft explains that Windows displays the refresh rates supported by the selected display in Advanced display settings. Variable refresh rate may also allow compatible games and displays to adapt dynamically.
Before purchasing, check:
• Resolution
• Refresh rate at that resolution
• Panel size and available desk distance
• Video ports on both computer and monitor
• Cable specification
• Variable-refresh-rate compatibility
• Stand adjustment and VESA mounting
• Whether your hardware can produce useful frame rates in your games
After connecting the monitor, verify the selected rate in Windows. A high-refresh display may remain at a lower setting until configured.
7. CHAIR, DESK AND POSTURE
A “gaming chair” label does not guarantee comfort or good support. Adjustability and fit matter more than styling.
UK Health and Safety Executive guidance recommends positioning the top of the screen around eye level and about an arm’s length away, keeping shoulders relaxed, placing the keyboard below elbow height and supporting the lower back.
Consider adjusting your existing setup before buying a new chair:
• Seat height
• Lower-back support
• Armrest position
• Screen height and distance
• Keyboard and mouse placement
• Lighting and reflections
• Regular breaks or changes of activity
Do not claim that a chair or cushion will prevent or treat back pain. Seek appropriate medical advice for persistent pain.
A SENSIBLE UPGRADE ORDER
For mouse-and-keyboard games:
1. Fix comfort or reliability problems.
2. Replace an inconsistent or unsuitable mouse.
3. Improve audio or microphone quality if communication is a problem.
4. Replace the keyboard only if its layout, reliability or feel is limiting you.
5. Consider a display upgrade when your computer and games can benefit from it.
For controller games:
1. Confirm platform and game compatibility.
2. Replace a faulty or uncomfortable controller.
3. Improve audio or communication if needed.
4. Review display performance.
5. Improve seating and desk arrangement.
The correct order changes according to your existing equipment.
FINAL VERDICT
Budget gaming accessories can be worthwhile, but there is no universal list of products that every player should buy. Compatibility, comfort, build quality and a clear purpose matter more than gaming branding.
Start with the weakest part of your current setup. Check manufacturer support pages, measure your space and use independent reviews of the exact model before purchasing. A modest accessory that solves a real problem is better value than several fashionable upgrades that change nothing.
